The Director of Africa Programs is a key member of the Global Programs team who works closely with staff across countries to develop and implement GHC’s newest fellowship, the Africa Leadership Accelerator (ALA), and to build out GHC’s customized leadership and management development programs for global health organizations.
This role oversees all aspects of the ALA, including fellow recruitment and selection, onboarding, monthly virtual learning series, and in-person retreats and events. They are ultimately responsible for ensuring that fellows have an impactful experience from the moment they are accepted as GHC fellows to the day they complete the fellowship and transition into our alumni community.
Additionally, this role will contribute to the strategic development and implementation of GHC’s customized leadership and management development programs. Initially, this includes supporting the design of the business model, including designing new program offerings. Over time, they will manage a portfolio of projects, which includes meeting with potential clients, drafting proposals, designing and facilitating new programs.
Reporting to the Chief Program Officer, the Director of Africa Programs will be directly supported by the Fellowship Program Associate. They will work closely with Africa country leadership and program team counterparts in the U.S.
The Director of Africa Programs will have significant demonstrated expertise in adult and experiential learning, program design and facilitation, and is skilled in building relationships across diverse communities. Candidates should have prior experience designing and facilitating leadership and management programs for early and mid-career leaders.
Roles & Responsibilities
    • Strategy
    • Lead the development and execution of the Africa Leadership Accelerator program strategy, including fellow recruitment and selection strategy, program design and implementation, program policies and protocols, stakeholder communication, etc.
    • Partner closely with colleagues across the organization to ensure the Africa Leadership Accelerator is aligned and integrated with GHC’s full program portfolio, including the U.S. Leadership Accelerator, alumni program, and our impact strategy
    • Partner with the Chief Program Officer to build out GHC’s customized leadership and management development programs, by designing and marketing programs to global health partners
    • Collaborate  with the community impact team to design and implement a robust M&E framework to measure the impact of GHC’s programming
    • Coordinate with the development team to support donor solicitations and reporting
Curriculum Design
      • Design and manage in-person and virtual leadership and management workshops and retreats for fellows, partner organizations and clients
      • Curate and develop tools and resources for fellows, partners organizations and clients
      • Support country teams in designing bespoke programming for their local stakeholders
      • Manage relationships with GHC training partners and vendors
Facilitation
    • Facilitate GHC leadership and management workshops at fellow retreats, partner meetings, and for project-based clients
    • Prepare GHC staff to facilitate programming through preparatory meetings, facilitator resource development, and coaching
Program Management
    • Develop project plans, manage implementation, and regularly communicate with stakeholders across the organization for major projects including, but not limited to: fellow recruitment and selection, fellow onboarding, budget management, training logistics, client management, etc.
    • Oversee administrative processes to ensure fellows are well-informed and supported throughout the fellowship (e.g. updating the Community Portal, GHC’s online platform; managing fellow email listservs; drafting email templates for fellow and partner communications)
    • Manage the Africa Leadership Accelerator and Global Programs budgets
    • Support event managers in creating and monitoring event budgets
Team Management
    • Manage the Fellowship Program Associate, who supports the project management and program administration for the Africa Leadership Accelerator
    • Hire and manage staff, interns and subcontractors. Ensure team thrives through effective management
    • Regularly facilitate supervisory check-ins and team meetings
    • Support staff professional development through performance evaluation, coaching, and mentorship
Travel
    • Occasional international travel (up to 20%) is required. This includes travel for Africa Leadership Accelerator retreats (1-2x / year) and as required to facilitate client programs (estimated 3-4x / year). Occasional domestic travel expected in-country to attend and facilitate programming and stakeholder meetings (estimated 1x / quarter).
Competencies and Qualifications
    • Program Design and Impact: Expertise in human-centered design and creating strategies that drive measurable program outcomes.
    • Adult Learning and Curriculum Development: Proven ability to develop and implement adult learning programs, with a focus on leadership development.
    • Leadership and People Management: Skilled in managing, mentoring, and developing diverse teams to achieve high performance and growth.
    • Stakeholder Engagement: Strong interpersonal skills for building strategic partnerships and driving collaboration with diverse stakeholders.
Professional Experience
      • At least 8 years of relevant professional experience in program management within the social impact or global health sector, with a focus on designing and delivering adult learning and leadership development programs, preferably for early to mid-career professionals.
      • Experience managing a team or working as a coach.
      • Experience using design thinking principles to create programs that address specific needs and drive meaningful impact.
      • Experience using data to assess program impact and identify areas for improvement.
      • Experience in the global health or social impact sector in Africa.
      • Comfort working with diverse, multicultural groups of learners.
      • Knowledge of budget management and financial planning for programs.
      • Strong project management skills, with the ability to oversee multiple projects simultaneously and deliver results on time and within budget.
Location
This hybrid-remote position is in East/Southern Africa  (preferred, Malawi, Rwanda, Uganda, Zambia). GHC does not sponsor work permits. Applicants must be authorized to work in the country from which they are applying to work.
