Position: Production Manager
Our client in the Agriculture production Sector based in Lusaka is looking to hire a Production Manager who will be responsible to organize and oversee the seed production of maize and legumes. He/she will be ultimately responsible for the smooth running of all production lines and the quality of seed.
Key Duties and Responsibilities.
– Develop production schedules, making sure production processes stay within the budget and deadlines.
– Supervise field officers and conduct performance appraisals according to their key result areas & Recruit suitable maize and legume seed growers and discuss the conditions of the contracts.
– Facilitate, coordinate, and monitor maize and legume seed production and processing in Mkushi, Chisamba, Kasama, Chipata, Mpika, Mpongwe and southern province farming blocks in Zambia.
– To ensure that all seed production is done according to the hiring company production guidelines (e.g. recommended land preparation, recommended plant population, disease, weed and insect free environment; free of off types, timely detaselling,efficient and timely harvesting; shelling, bagging and transportation).
– To ensure that seed produced is of high quality, and meets the standards set by the hiring company and International Seed Testing Association (ISTA).
– To provide technical support to seed growers.
– To ensure that all harvested seed is sampled, tested for all laboratory analysis parameters and delivered to warehouse.
– To determine the required amount of parent seed for all contracted area.
– Order parent seeds and Update seed parent position on SAP.
– To ensure that seed parents are well stored and labeled.
– Determine the required quantity of consumables (bulks bags to be given to the growers for parking raw seed), and ensuring that it is sourced timely.
– Scout for diseases, insect pests and weeds in planted fields, and providing technical information on how to prevent and control them.
– Write field reports, production of weekly reports and contributing to monthly and annual reports.
– Organize for transport to bring seed from growers to the plant.
– Contribute to the evaluation of exiting and experimental hybrids in Zambia.
– Coordinate, organize and conduct demonstration trials and hosting field days across the country
– Offer after sale services to farmers.
– Ensure Site Safety, lead ESH efforts, provide assistance and arrange for resources to promote safety at the site.
Main Responsibilities
To recommend to the Managing Director for his approval, policies and procedures regarding production.
Relationship: The post-holder will be accountable to the Director and will have close relationship with Human Resource Manager, Head of Marketing
Environment: The Post holder will be located at the head office in Lusaka Barlastone area. He or she will spend 90% of the time in the field and 10% at the office.
Qualifications
Degree/Diploma in Agricultural Sciences with 3-4 years of experience
Bachelors degree in Agronomy, Crop science plant breeding/ related.
Seed Inspection Certificate is a must.
Effective communication skills and organizational skills
Results and Relationship oriented, autonomous and efficient.
Computer literate (MS Packages)
Driving license is a must for the post holder
Age: 24 – 35 years.
