Job Purpose

The Communications Specialist will be responsible for implementation of a organization’s communication strategy, both internally and externally. Take the lead in the generation of content from technical work, reports and projects to enhance the visibility of the organizations work to the Zambian public and beyond. Ensure coherence with the organizations corporate communication policy for all communication and information outputs and ensure that the donor and organization’s brands are well represented. Oversee the production of a wide range of content types, from company newsletters to public relations articles.

Summary of Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic counsel to the businesses by providing political and policy intelligence and analysis of relevant emerging policy and political developments, together with clear recommendations to senior colleagues.
  • Develop and implement an approved media strategy for the organization.
  • Coordinate cross-functional campaigns and communications projects with relevant departments in the business
  • Support the development of sound country level strategies and plans which efficiently profile the importance of the organsation’s program, HIV transformation and influencing priorities.
  • Coordinate, produce and disseminate communication and advocacy materials, including brochures, project briefs, policy briefs, posters, and other visibility products in close coordination with focal points in the respective departments and in observance of corporate and USAID branding guidelines
  • Work with the senior team on creating and implementing a communications strategy for the business
  • Coordinate with Programme teams while organizing high-level and high-visibility events; Coordinate and manage media engagement for high profile events. Ensure the organizations brand visibility during events.
  • Work with public relations and marketing team members to brainstorm ideas for new content opportunities
  • Manage media inquiries and coordinate press conferences, interviews, and events
  • Work closely with the marketing team to develop marketing strategies
  • Manage communications consultants, photographers, videographers and printers to ensure the creation of appropriate messaging, content, as well as high quality production of all communications materials.
  • Develop a media database and partnerships with media organizations and journalists; interact and pitch stories of interest;
  • Organize media field visits and sensitization of reporters and editors.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with programme teams on media engagement during events and missions and collect visual and audio footage for archiving.

Primary Areas of Accountability:

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree in Health promotion, Social behaviour Change Communication (SBCC), Mass Communications, Public Relations, Journalism and any other related field
  • Advanced university degree in public health, social sciences, health promotion, strategic communication planning for social change, participatory communication, and research will be a plus
  • Must have a 5 years’ experience in Corporate Communications or Public Relations
  • Experience of 2-4 years in Corporate Communications /Public Relations in the NGO world will be a plus
  • Proven experience in health promotion/SBCC or Development communication experience is an added advantage
  • Must be experienced in leading teams
  • Great coordination and communication
  • Good understanding of the Zambian political and policy environment and the ability to interpret the impact of policies on the business
  • Experience with running projects and Managing risk by identification and assessments including mitigation.
  • Solving problems with speed
  • Must have experience with negotiations and managing stakeholders
  • Must have experience in training and mentorship
  • Must be a member of a relevant professional body (ZIM or ZIPRC)
