2.2 DATABASE ENGINEER (X1)

JOB PURPOSE:

To supervise and undertake the designing, development, testing and maintenance of database in order to support the operations of the University.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Participates in the preparation of the section and individual work plans in order to have organized work flow of activities and output to track sectional and individual performance.
  • Undertakes effectively the designing, development, testing, implementation, maintenance, integration and documentation of the Data and Database Systems in order to support the operations of the University.
  • Undertakes constant design and redesigning of key University data, through innovation in order to capture, store, secure, retrieve and analyze data.
  • Undertakes the backup of data in order to restore data in event of a system failure.
  • Undertakes constant design and redesigning of key University database, through innovation in order to capture, store secure, retrieve and analyze data.
  • Supervises effectively human resources in the section in order to achieve the objectives.
  • Participates in the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual reports in order to track operational performance.
  • Design, develop, and maintain database systems to ensure high performance, availability, and security.
  • Implement and optimize database architecture to meet the university’s needs.
  • Develop and manage database backup and recovery plans.
  • Ensure data integrity and implement measures to protect against data loss or corruption.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to gather requirements and develop database solutions that support various applications.
  • Optimize and tune database performance.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation for database systems and processes.
  • Implement and manage database security measures.
  • Provide database support and troubleshooting for end-users and applications.
  • Stay updated with the latest database technologies and best practices.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in database management systems (DBMS) such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server, and MongoDB.
  • Strong understanding of database concepts including normalization, indexing, transactions, and query optimization.
  • Experience with front-end development technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and their integration with databases.
  • Knowledge of back-end programming languages (Java, C. Python, Node.js) and their interaction with databases.
  • Experience with database design, implementation, and maintenance.
  • Proficiency in SQL and experience with database query optimization.
  • Knowledge of data modeling and database schema design.
  • Experience with data warehousing and ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes.
  • Understanding of database backup and recovery strategies.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based database solutions (AWS RDS, Azure SQL Database, Google Cloud SQL) Knowledge of database security best practices and tools.
  • Experience with database performance tuning and optimization.

QUALIFICATIONS AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES:

  • Full Grade 12 School Certificate with a minimum of five (5) credits, including English and Mathematics.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Information Technology.
  • Aminimum of three (3) years of practical work experience in a reputable organization.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are mandatory.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., Oracle Certified Professional, Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, MySql Certified Database-Specialty,) are highly desirable.
  • Strong commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong focus on quality and accuracy.
