Job description:

Purpose of the role

The Environmental Manager will oversee and ensure compliance with environmental regulations and policies within the Kansanshi Mining operations. This role involves the development and implementation of environmental management systems, monitoring of environmental impacts, and leading initiatives to reduce environmental footprints.

Key Responsibilities

This position will be required to adhere to all relevant requirements, policies, procedures and regulations pertaining to health, safety, environment and quality, as well as finance, human resources, and any other regulations as required by the company and relevant to the level of the role and responsibilities of the function.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with national and local environmental regulations.
  • Maintain current knowledge of environmental legislation and best practices relevant to the mining industry.

Environmental Management

  • Managing the development and implementation of the environmental management system based on ISO 14001:2015 Standard
  • Conduct risk assessments to identify potential environmental impacts of mining activities on the environment and surrounding communities.
  • Develop and manage strategies to minimize environmental risks and promote sustainability.

Monitoring and Reporting

  • Oversee environmental monitoring programmes, including air, water, soil, and biodiversity assessments.
  • Prepare regular environmental reports for management and regulatory agencies.
  •  Manage both hazardous and non-hazardous waste disposal and recycling efforts to minimize ecological impact.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Serve as a point of contact for environmental concerns from local communities, regulatory bodies, and other stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders to ensure the delivery of environmentally related programmes on site and in the community.
  • Facilitate communication and reporting on environmental performance to internal and external stakeholders.

Training and Awareness

  • Develop and conduct training programmes for employees on environmental policies and best practices.
  • Promote a culture of environmental responsibility within Kansanshi Mine and the surrounding communities.

Budget Management

  • Develop and manage the budget for environmental programmes and initiatives.
  •  Identify funding opportunities for environmental projects.

Continuous Improvement

  • Stay current with industry trends in sustainability and environmental practices.
  •  Lead initiatives to improve the environmental performance of Kansanshi mining operations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Certifications related to environmental management (e.g., ISO 14001:2015) are a plus.

Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in environmental management with at least 3 years in a management role, within the mining industry.
  • Strong knowledge of environmental regulations and standards.
  • Strong knowledge of Equator Principles and Performance Standards.
  • Proficiency in environmental software and tools.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Fieldwork in potentially hazardous areas; adherence to safety standards is essential.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
