Position Summary

The Managing Director (MD) will lead all the firm’s investment activities and should have extensive knowledge and experience in setting-up and operating Private Funds in Zambia. The Managing Director (MD) will also lead the design and execution of all the firm’s alternative investment strategies.

Responsibilities:

Investing Activities

  • Lead the team that will find, structure, develop, support and monitor portfolio investments
  • Co-ordinate and chair Investment Committee meetings to review and structure prospective investments, to report on investment progress and to discuss portfolio strategy
  • Develop and manage fund governance structures
  • Work closely with team members to coach them in diligence, deal structuring and post-investment management.
  • Ensure adequate financial and social impact monitoring of portfolio companies as well as compliance with appropriate local regulations
  • Fundraise: the MD will be actively involved in raising funds for the various alternative investment strategies

Strategic Management of Funds

  • Help to translate the vision into design and strategy of all funds
  • Develop a strategy to identify new sources of capital, and play an active role with investors on both fundraising and around the financial performance of investments
  • Help raise follow-on capital for portfolio companies where appropriate
  • Build and maintain a positive team culture; lead, guide and motivate team members

Background and experience

· MBA (focus on Finance) or equivalent post-graduate professional qualification in a Finance-related field

· Significant experience working in commercial banking, corporate finance, investment banking, M&A and investment advisory and/or investment management.

· Proven track record of originating equity, debt and/or mezzanine deals within the local market

· Existing relationships within the local business, investment banking, lending, DFI, MFI and PE communities

· Experience working with international development institutions (World Bank, IMF, Africa Development Bank, etc.)

Technical skills

· Strategic, analytical, and problem-solving skills

· Commercial judgment and ability to assess risk and opportunity in potential investments

· Gravitas to interact effectively with promoters, management, government, prospective business partners, etc.

· Strong people skills, with the ability to network and develop productive relationships locally

Personal qualities

· Ability to open doors with senior business leaders, to get the firm into the right investment discussions and to prepare the ground for the firm’s investment teams

· Ability to work to deadlines and manage multiple projects effectively

· Outstanding business communication skills, including written, verbal and presentation. Comfort communicating with all levels of management internally and externally

· Experience working collaboratively as part of a team, facilitating information-sharing and organizational learning, with the capability and perseverance to work in a small team

· Ability to operate independently with minimal supervision and limited on the ground support

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Best-in-class experience in managing alternative investments. Demonstrated track record managing alternative investments in emerging markets, with experience in setting up and operating private funds in Zambia.
  • Exceptional people leadership and collaboration skills. The MD will lead a top-tier team, manage multiple stakeholders, gain buy-in and ensure support within the organization and externally.
