Job description:
Overall Job Purpose
- Reporting into the TSF Coordinator, the TSF Mechanical Specialist is accountable for effective equipment handling to include installation and modifications of TSF piping and pumping systems, allowing Operations to meet and exceed targets;
- The ‘equipment facilitator’ for all engineering functions – the role covers all water infrastructure and tailings disposal across the TSF area and other areas if required;
- The role is accountable to ensure a high level of engineering productivity regarding the maintenance of all piping and pumping systems, thus allowing operational sustainability;
- The role has a focus on daily-weekly-monthly basis execution and optimisation of all available resources.
Specific Job Responsibility
- Understand and execute accountabilities of legal appointment under Zambian Mining Regulations;
- The role has direct engineering responsibility for all equipment at the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF), and supporting facilities;
- Execute the daily operating instructions of the TSF Coordinator;
- The site water assets include TSF and decant lines, ETP and supporting water control infrastructure;
- Comply with site HSE standards and procedures;
- Report and assist with investigation of all human & equipment related safety and environmental incidents;
- Monitor, control and report on equipment status, performance indicators, TSF and Water activities, engineering shortfalls and corrective actions;
- Preparation, execution and management of preventative maintenance systems.
- Identify and lead continuous improvement projects related to improving efficiency of equipment, operations and work methods as well as cost saving initiatives.
- Attend meetings as requested, work in cooperation with the TSF Coordinator and Shift Supervisors where applicable, ensuring performance against operating systems compliance and delivery of equipment in a timely manner;
- Implement check- and log-sheets to monitor equipment status and take prompt and appropriate corrective action;
Job Specific Competencies
- Knowledge of tailings thickening systems are essential.
- Knowledge of piping and pumping systems are essential.
- Knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems are essential.
- Knowledge of lifting and rigging practices are essential.
- Good knowledge on the use of mechanical measuring instruments and conditioning monitoring systems are essential.
- Ability to read and update mechanical drawings and P & ID’s.
- Computer literate in all the Microsoft packages.
- Must be able to groom up new mechanical personnel to high standard.

Experience required to perform in this job
- 5 years’ experience in a mechanical maintenance environment, working in a technical specialist capacity
- 2 years’ experience in supervisory or proven leadership capacity in the mechanical maintenance environment.
Qualifications
- A grade 12 school certificate with a minimum of 5 passes
- Diploma in mechanical engineering from a recognized institution or an equivalent mechanical qualification (Required)
- Bachelors Degree in mechanical engineering from a recognized institution or an equivalent mechanical qualification (Preferred)
- All qualifications must be certified by ZAQA
- A valid Zambian vehicle driving permit.
- Registered as a member of the Engineering Institute of Zambia (EIZ).
- Registered as a member of the Engineering Registration Board of Zambia (ERB) as defined by the Mining regulations of Zambia.
