Primary Purpose

The Mechanical Technologist is responsible for providing technical expertise in the design, repair, and maintenance of mechanical systems and components used in heavy mining equipment. This role ensures machinery operates efficiently and complies with safety and operational standards.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Technical Support and Maintenance
    • Perform detailed inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs on mechanical systems.
    • Assist in the design, modification, and improvement of mechanical components and systems.
    • Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs to reduce downtime.
  2. System Diagnostics and Testing
    • Utilize diagnostic tools and software to analyze and resolve mechanical issues.
    • Conduct functional tests to verify system integrity and performance after repairs or installations.
  3. Documentation and Reporting
    • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, parts used, and system modifications.
    • Prepare technical reports and provide recommendations for improvements or upgrades.
  4. Installation and Assembly
    • Oversee the installation and assembly of mechanical components on new or refurbished machinery.
    • Ensure compliance with manufacturer specifications and safety standards.
  5. Health, Safety, and Environment Compliance
    • Ensure all work adheres to safety protocols and environmental regulations.
    • Actively participate in risk assessments and hazard identification.
  6. Collaboration and Training
    • Work closely with engineers, technicians, and other specialists to resolve complex mechanical challenges.
    • Train and mentor junior staff and technicians on mechanical systems and best practices.
  7. Customer Interaction
    • Provide technical guidance and support to customers, addressing inquiries and concerns.
    • Assist in the development of tailored mechanical solutions to meet client requirements.

Job Specification
Qualifications and Experience
  • Diploma or Advanced Certificate in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in mechanical maintenance and repair, particularly in the mining or heavy machinery industry.
Knowledge and Skills
  • In-depth knowledge of mechanical systems, including engines, gears, and drive trains.
  • Proficiency in interpreting mechanical schematics, blueprints, and technical documentation.
  • Familiarity with diagnostic tools, software, and modern mechanical technologies.
  • Strong understanding of materials and mechanical properties for wear and stress analysis.
  • Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental regulations related to mechanical systems.
