Job description:

Overall Job Purpose

To perform and lead the core geological operational and technical functions within the mine geology team, ensuring all geological data is delivered to best practice standards and on time in order to facilitate the ongoing development of accurate resource, ore control, and geological models.  Provide support to key stakeholders across the mine value chain through the delivery of accurate relevant geo-scientific knowledge.

Specific Job Responsibility

The specific tasks to be performed by the position holder will include:

  • Demonstration of a “safety first” focus by following the company’s THINK Safety program and acting as a role model to personnel, whilst continuously developing safe and effective work practices and procedures.
  • Conducting ore delineation and control practices – including efforts to minimize ore dilution, ore contamination, ore loss, and material misclassification.
  • All functions related to Reverse Circulation Drilling (RC) including; planning, execution, supervision, chip logging and sampling to best practice and QA/QC standards
  • All functions related to resource definition Diamond Drilling (DD), including; hole planning, execution, supervision, core logging and sampling to best practice and QA/QC standards
  • In-pit geological and structural mapping.
  • Integration and interpretation of all geological and sampling datasets to create 3D geological, structural, geo-technical, geo-chemical, and geo-metallurgical models.
  • Develop and operate a best practice production tracking and reconciliation systems
  • Continuous liaison with key stakeholders, including mining operations, mining engineering, mineral processing, geotechnical and hydro-geological teams to drive benefits aligned with business objectives
  • Management and leadership of the mine geology support teams, including both day-to-day core operations and long-term strategy, driving quality and standards in the teams’ work and efficiencies.
  • Train, mentor, and develop graduate geologist and geological support teams
  • Assist in the preparation of geological and operations reports and official communications
  • Assist the Senior Mine Geologist with the planning and prioritization of geological activities across the mine leases, where requested.
  • Perform any other project work or related duties assigned by the supervisor

Job Specific Competencies

  • Operational experience in open pit sediment hosted copper and/or nickel deposits advantageous
  • Must have had prior exposure to RC and DD drilling operations including core logging and sampling
  • Skilled in the use of 3D geological software systems such as Datamine, Surpac, Deswick, Leapfrog or ArcGIS
  • Full clean driving licence suitable for manual light vehicles.

Experience & Qualification

  • At least 4 years’ experience in the mining industry, the majority of which should have been spent in a mining production environment.
  • Recognized Tertiary Qualification (Bachelors of Science BSc) in any Geoscience field
  • Postgraduate qualifications would be considered advantageous and highly desirable.
