I.  Project Background:  John Snow Health Zambia (JSH-Z) with support from USAID through the eSCMIS Project will continue assisting the Government of the Republic of Zambia in the rollout of a next-generation electronic supply chain management information system (eSCMIS). The eSCMIS Project aims to increase the use of health services, decrease disease burden, and increase quality of life by ensuring appropriate quantities and quality of health commodities are available at health facilities to meet patient demands. Private sector engagement and eSCMIS transition to the government are key objectives in Zambia during this 5-year project plan. The eSCMIS Project will work closely with and in support of the Ministry of Health.

II. Position Background and Purpose:

(a)    Scope of Work #1:  Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) Intern

Background: The internship program for the eSCMIS project is based on the vision of having a community of Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) professionals and software developers and testers who understand and can contribute to supporting and enhancing the national electronic logistics management information system (eLMIS) after the project lifecycle. JSH-Z seeks a dynamic intern to be based in Lusaka, Zambia. The MEL Intern will participate in the implementation of the USAID eSCMIS Projects’ activity Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning Plan (aMELP) to effectively contribute to the enhancement of the eLMIS. S/he will work closely with the MEL Manager and Technical Director to ensure compliance with the aMELP and project work plan. The MEL Intern will report to the MEL Manager.

Activity Purpose:  To support activities associated with monitoring, evaluation and learning, data mining, analysis, and dissemination of LMIS information for Zambia public health supply chain management.

III.   Activities/Tasks

  • Support the preparation and execution of M&E assessments
  • Support data collection for during routing M&E activities
  • Coordinate with ESCMIS technical teams, health facilities and districts on data quality validation and address identified discrepancies
  • Support review and update of reference data used in the ELMIS and for tracking activities
  • Take note of and follow-up on action points and deliverables arising from meetings and workshops including MEL team meetings, technical and staff meetings
  • Participate in organizing and supporting meetings
  • Support filing and documentation processes for the MEL team as required by the project
  • Participate in maintaining key M&E data sets including indicator data and eLMIS master data
  • Participate in presenting on project activities during workshops, meetings, and trainings
  • Complete tasks as assigned by the supervisor of record

IV.   Requirements

  • University/College graduate in Public health, Supply Chain Management, Biostatistics, Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences
  • Good computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel)
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Willing to learn
  • Basic knowledge in data analysis
  • Energetic and eager to tackle new projects and ideas
  • Experience with data collection and review

(b)    Scope of Work #2:   Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning Intern (Junior Data Analyst)

Background: The internship program for the eSCMIS project is based on the vision of having a community of software developers and testers who understand and can contribute to supporting and enhancing the national eLMIS post the project lifecycle. JSH-Z seeks a dynamic intern for the position of MEL- Junior data analyst Intern to be based in Lusaka, Zambia. S/he will participate in implementation of the eSCMIS Projects’ activity Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Plan (aMELP) to effectively contribute to the enhancement of the eLMIS and associated data systems. The MEL- Junior Data Analyst Intern will report to the MEL Manager and help in achieving the project’s goals and objectives.

Activity Purpose:  To support activities associated with monitoring, evaluation and learning, and software development for eLMIS.

III.   Activities/Tasks

  • Support the preparation and execution of M&E assessments
  • Support the MEL team data collection, review and cleaning including inputs for routine reports
  • Coordinate with ESCMIS technical teams, health facilities and districts on data quality validation and address identified discrepancies
  • Review ELMIS reports and report any inconsistencies identified
  • Take note of and follow-up on action points and deliverables arising from meetings and workshops including MEL team meetings, technical and staff meetings
  • Support the identification of software bugs and desired enhancements through participation in software testing and/or review
  • Develop and/or review queries for extracting data for analysis and quality reviews
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor of record
  • Implement and adhere to JSH-Z’s personnel and fraud management policies

IV.   Requirements

  • BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, information systems management, Health Informatics or related field and / or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of interactive and transaction processing applications
  • Ability to develop software in C++, Java, SQL queries and/or other mainstream languages
  • Ability to develop applications in Java, Spring Framework, spring boot, Angular/VueJS JavaScript, bootstrap, and high charts.
  • Knowledge of Relational Databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, SQL), ORM technologies (JPA2, Hibernate), and MyBatis
  • Strong analytic and problem solving skills
  • Strong verbal and written English
  • Good communication skill
  • Ability to work in a dynamic team-oriented environment but self-managing of own time
  • Ability to travel in-country to support technical activities.
