 JOB DESCRIPTION

Position: Outreach Assistant

Location: Kabwe, Kapiri Mposhi, Kasama, Chipata, Nakonde, Lusaka & Chirundu

Category: Full-Time position

Reports to: Wellness Center Coordinator

Background:  

John Snow Health Limited (JSH), a public health organization dedicated to improving the provision of public health services in Zambia and the region, is recruiting for an Outreach Assistant for the USAID-funded Controlling HIV Epidemic for Key and Underserved Populations (CHEKUP II). CHEKUP II aims to address the needs of people living with HIV (PLHIV) and those most at risk of acquiring HIV and contribute to HIV mitigation and epidemic control. The program seeks to improve the health outcomes of key populations in the highest HIV-burden provinces of Zambia.

Position Summary:

Reports to the Wellness Centre Coordinator and works closely with other team members on KP programming, the incumbent will work closely with KP community members who are at high risk of HIV infection and offer high impact HIV/AIDS prevention services. S/he/they will work in the community in close collaboration with the health facilities and Wellness Centre based staff, and  KP-led Civil Society Organizations (KP-CSOs).

Responsibilities:

  • Sensitization on PrEP services as an effective HIV prevention method for at risk populations especially for KP discordant couples
  • Works closely with Lay Counselors and other program staff in ensuring all eligible beneficiaries are provided with high impact HIV prevention services in the congregate and closed settings
  • Carrying out routine Community mappings to identify hot spots, congregate and closed settings for target populations
  • Provide community engagement and sensitizations sessions on HIV/AIDS prevention messaging tailored for key populations to eligible individuals/groups using one-on-one sessions and group session
  • Distribution and sensitization of accurate information on condom use for both male and female, and family planning
  • Provide mental health and psychosocial support to the KP communities

Knowledge, abilities, skills required:

  • Must be a role model for other peers by acting professionally and with dignity
  • Establish and maintain good communication with clients and other members of staff
  • Maintain an appropriate level of knowledge and skill; give correct and truthful information, and refer or consult with project experts where not sure of right information
  • Should refrain from engaging in actions that could conflict with or violate the program’s rules

Qualifications: 

  • Experience in social mobilization of community members
  • Minimum grade 12 complete – with certificate and able to read and write in English
  • Psychosocial counseling certificate
  • Experience and skill using computers, tablets and databases is highly preferred
  • Experience in working with Key Populations will be an added advantage
  • Females are encouraged to apply

Supervision and Reporting: 

The Outreach Assistant will work under the guidance and supervision of the Wellness Centre Coordinator with dotted lines to the Operations Manager.
