Lumwana Mining Company seeks to recruit a highly committed employee for the position of Safety Superintendent – PFS (Fixed Term Contract) to join the versatile Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Department under Mineral Resource Management – PFS Section. Reporting to the Occupation Health and Safety Manager, you will be responsible for the day-to-day oversight of the Health and safety, internal social and risk management aspects of the Mineral Resource Management – PFS project. Your duties will include but are not limited to the following:

- Monitor safety programs for the PFS project to a standard that is compatible with international practice and undertaken in a timely and cost-effective manner.
- Promote safety through all employees by developing and implementing systems that can be assessed and utilised within PFS but aligned to LMC – OH&S Department.
- Conduct training and develop and implement safety training programs within PFS as aligned to OH&S Department where needs are identified.
- Develop and maintain environmental monitoring programs for the PFS project.
- Implement safety management systems compatible with the requirements of ISO 45001:2018 or equivalent as already existed under LMC – OH&S Department.
- Proactively identify issues as they arise and identify solutions.
- Prepare safety statistics monthly and analyze and report trends.
- Liaise with senior staff within PFS section to ensure they are aligned with the overall safety objectives of LMC as shall be determined by both MRM and OH&S Department.
- Accountable for completion of all tasks identified in the Management Operating System (MOS) to the specified quality and timelines as assigned to this role
- Develop, implement, and maintain safe work procedures and promote high safety and health awareness. Promote and comply with the LMC – OH&S – Policy.
- Be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the PFS team as aligned to LMC Site OH&S Requirements.
- Ensure appropriate facilities, procedures, and workforce competence to achieve legal compliance, incident prevention and the achievement of tasks in an environmentally sustainable manner.
- Develop continuous improvement targets for the function and drive and measure achievement of these targets.
- Ensure the development and maintenance of up-to-date job procedures for all tasks performed within the PFS sections and report any gaps to OH&S Manager for site alignment.
- Ensure effective communication with delegate prior to departure from site.
- Ensure personnel are adequately inducted in their work area and are aware of all workplace rules and critical procedures applying within PFS in liaison with OH&S Department – Safety Operations Superintendent.
Actively contribute to site safety policy and new initiatives and implement change as directed by the Management team
To be considered for the position, you must meet the following requirements:
- Full Grade 12 School Certificate
- Degree in OHS
- NEBOSH – International Diploma in OH&S will be an added advantage
- A minimum of Ten (10) years post qualification experience with at least Five (5) years in a mining or industrial environment and Five (5) years in a senior health and safety role.
- Working knowledge of OH&S systems, preferable ISO45001:2018, NOSA based
- Knowledge in incident investigation methodology such as ICAM, TapRoot, Fishbone and 5 WHYs
- Demonstrated success as an effective leader.
- Demonstrated ability to lead a team safely and improve team safety awareness.
- High level understanding of relevant legislation governing Mining Industry such as Mining Regulations, OHS Act of 2010 and Explosive Regulations.
- Demonstrated application of continuous improvement ideas
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Power Point, Word) and good communicator
- Must have a valid Driver’s License.
- Must be familiar with safe working practices.
