The Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI) with support from Global Fund under the Covid-19 (wave1) grant seeks to recruit a suitably qualified and experienced individual for the position listed below;
SENIOR EDITOR (01)
Reports to: Director-Public Health Policy, Diplomacy and Communication
Location: Zambia National Public Health Institute
Job Purpose:
To oversee the editorial process, ensure the quality and consistency of written materials and support Zambia National Public Health Institute in effectively communicating its research findings, best practices, and technical information to various stakeholders.
Responsibilities/Principal Accountabilities
- Overseeing editorial processes by leading the editorial team and oversees all aspects of the editorial process from manuscript submission to publication in order to ensure quality of work
- Undertakes effectively develops and implements of editorial guidelines and standards and workflows to ensure consistency and quality in written materials.
- Effectively undertakes the provision of substantive editing, copyediting, and proofreading support to authors and contributors in order to ensure that written materials meet established standards for clarity, coherence, and accuracy.
- Work closely with authors, researchers, subject matter experts, and program staff to ensure that written materials accurately reflect research findings and meet the needs of diverse audiences.
- Effectively and timely manages editorial workflows, including assigning tasks, tracking progress, and prioritizing projects to meet deadlines and production schedules. This may involve coordinating with internal and external stakeholders, such as peer reviewers, designers, and production teams.
- Ensures compliance with copyright laws, ethical guidelines, and publication policies in the preparation and dissemination of written materials. This may also involve obtaining permissions for copyrighted content, addressing conflicts of interest, and ensuring transparency and integrity in the editorial process.
- Timely conducting of research in order to stay abreast of emerging trends, developments, and best practices in editorial processes, writing, and communication. This may involve attending conferences, workshops, and training sessions, as well as conducting research and networking with peers in the field.
- Effectively provides leadership to editorial assistants within the organization. This may involve assigning tasks, providing training and mentorship, and conducting performance evaluations to support the professional development of team members.
Required Qualifications
- Full Grade 12 School Certificate with Five O Level Credits Including English and Mathematics
- Bachelors in Mass Communication, Journalism, Communication or any other related Social Sciences
- Master’s Degree in Mass Communication, Journalism, Communication or any other related Social Sciences is an added advantage
Experience and skills
- Minimum of 6 years of experience in editorial roles, preferably in a scientific or technical publishing environment.
- Proven experience in substantive editing, copyediting, and proofreading of scientific reports, manuscripts, and technical documents.
- Strong knowledge of editorial principles, style guides (e.g., APA, Chicago Manual of Style), grammar rules, and publication standards.
- Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and effectively to diverse audiences.
- Proficiency in using editorial tools and software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, editing software).
- Experience managing editorial workflows, production schedules, and publication processes.
- Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and
work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
