Purpose

Assist the Superintendent – Secondary Smelting operations in directing and controlling the shift operations of the Converters, Anode Furnaces, Casting Wheels, Mobile Equipment, Main Aisle Cranes and Anode Loading.

Key Responsibilities

This position will be required to adhere to all relevant requirements, policies, procedures and legal regulations pertaining to health, safety, environment and quality, as well as finance, human resources, and any other regulations as required by the company and relevant to the level of the role and responsibilities of the function

  • Provide direction and control to the shift controllers – Secondary smelting section.
  • Maintain safety compliance, system standards and discipline in the section
  • Ensure that shift throughput targets are achieved for the Peirce Smith Converters, Anode Furnace and Casting Wheel are achieved.
  • Supervise the control room operators and other operators in the Section to achieve shift production targets safely.
  • Monitor plant equipment operations and ensure operating procedures are strictly followed
  • Ensure that the critical operating parameters are kept within pre-determined limits
  • Monitor and interpret assay results from process streams to maintain quality standards
  • Actively seek more information and assistance from other sources as required to diagnose and correct any problems with operating equipment and processes (e.g. maintenance, metallurgists)
  • Understand and identify all relevant plant equipment, process control and emergency systems; be able to explain these clearly to others
  • Provide training and development opportunities for all direct reports on an ongoing basis
  • Liaise closely with his counterpart in the Primary Smelting, Acid plant and Utilities areas
  • Assist in the cold and hot commissioning of the Peirce Smith Converters
  • Monitor and interpret process data via the plant process historian system (PI)
  • Maintain SHE standards, house-keeping and discipline in the Section
  • Liaise closely with shift maintenance for smooth running of the plant and minimize downtimes
  • Maintain an accurate operating log-sheet using computerized or other systems. Reporting of all changes, corrections and abnormalities on time
  • Other duties as directed by the Superintendent- Secondary Smelting

Qualifications

Desirable:

  • Tertiary Qualification in Chemical or Metallurgical Engineering or Equivalent

Experience

  • At least 2 years of supervisory experience in copper smelting in particular with PS Converters, Anode Furnaces, Main Aisle cranes, Anode Furnace and Casting areas. And 5 years of operating experience on all or any of the individual areas.
